About ECE

The ECE Department at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology offers a stimulating environment for studying electronic and computer engineering. The Department has amassed a talented group of faculty dedicated to excellence in research and teaching. We have equipped our laboratories and classrooms with state-of-the-art facilities for cutting-edge research and multimedia teaching. Our goal is to prepare students to become capable engineers and future technology leaders in the ever-changing world of high technology. We offer a full range of courses leading to a number of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

On 2nd October 1991, the Department opened the doors to its first class of 122 undergraduate students and 24 postgraduate students under the name of "Electrical and Electronic Engineering" or EEE. In order to reflect our strategic and focused programs and expertise in both teaching and research, and to be consistent with almost all universities in the world, especially in North America, the Department has changed its name to "Electronic and Computer Engineering" on 2nd May 2006. The Department currently has about 600 undergraduate students, over 300 postgraduate students, and 42 teaching faculty members.

Currently, research in ECE is supported by more than 100 research grants and sponsored by the Hong Kong SAR Government and industries.
