Prof. Ming LIU featured in IEEE video talking about his research on “How Robots Learn”

Three robotics researchers were selected to be featured on the IEEE Transmitter website talking about their research on “How Robots Learn”.

Prof. Ming LIU was selected as one of these researchers, and his video is now online.  In the video, Prof. LIU discussed his research in learning for mobile robotics and robotic perception. He explained that there are two ways that robots can learn, the traditional way or through deep data based learning. The traditional way uses the Simultaneous Localization Area Mapping (SLAM) program. This allows the robots to move in unknown environments and while it is moving, the robot is able to create a map of the area. The robot will learn in real time. Deep data based learning can take longer, but requires fewer prior assumptions. The robot starts with basic knowledge and collects experiences as it operates, building its own knowledge base.
