PhD Student KANG Eun Jeon developed the “HKUST luXbeacon” – a batteryless Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Beacon for a green Internet of Thing (IoT) and smart cities technologies

Mr. KANG Eun Jeon, a Ph.D. student supervised by Prof. James SHE in HKUST-NIE Social Media Lab., the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE), has developed the “HKUST luXbeacon” – a batteryless Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Beacon for a green Internet of Thing (IoT) and smart cities technologies.

By harvesting energy from solar and indoor lighting, luXbeacon can power itself and operate around the clock without compromising its reliability and performance. Furthermore, the research group decided to make the intellectual properties of this invention open-hardware and open-source licensing through the University to make the invention affordable and accessible soon to the public for the greater research impacts.
