NFF has made the world's smallest miniaturized "Redbird" (HKUST sundial) along with the ECE/SENG logos using the 3-D nano printer

We are pleased to present the world's smallest miniaturized "Redbird" (HKUST sundial) along with the ECE/SENG logos.  The size of the Redbird is about 50 micrometer (0.05 mm), which is just about or smaller than the diameter of a human hair.

The enabling technology is a Three-dimensional (3-D) Laser Nano-Printer at Nanosystem Fabrication Facility (NFF).  In simple terms, it is a state-of-the-art 3-D printer, with advanced laser technologies enabling a lateral feature size of smaller than 100 nanometer.

What is this good for?  Imagine we can now rapidly make sophisticated 3-D nano-scale structures on a chip to control the flow of electrons, light, heat, fluids and biological cells, etc., meaning new sciences and next-generation technologies that are either not possible or too difficult to integrate on a chip using conventional planar technologies.  Just like our "Redbird," sky is the limit.
